About the role, Your Impact:

Baxter & Woodman’s Spatial Technology Group has a rewarding opportunity for a Field Services Technician. The position will be based out of our Mokena, IL office and will include opportunities to work in the field as well as at client locations. This on-the-job experience will support the firm’s Spatial Technology department. The primary task for this position will be utility locating using electromagnetic technology (RD 8200). Successful candidates will possess a strong work ethic, technical problem-solving skills, and the ability to work within a wide variety of project types and environmental conditions. The ideal candidate will also value the importance of being a team member, delivering high-quality work, and working efficiently. What your day-to-day will look like, what you will learn on the job:

  • Assists with field related technology and data collection operations including, but not limited to the following hardware systems technology:
    • RD Utility Locating Equipment
    • GNSS GPS Technologies
  • Various Survey and Infrastructure Technologies
  • Assists with survey related technology operations including, but not limited to the following software technology:
    • Esri Desktop and Field Apps
    • Spatial Datasets
    • AutoCAD
    • Trimble Business Center
  • Performs and coordinates utility locates using radio detection equipment and GNSS equipment.
  • Provide field-based services including but not limited to GPS data collection of construction as-builts, municipal utilities, pavement, signage, ADA, etc.
  • Assists the party chief/project surveyor and field crew with recording surveys by preparing notes, records, drawings, and applicable field equipment/hardware and software systems.
  • Provide onsite work for municipal clients and field-based projects as needed.
  • Completes projects in a timely, efficient, and effective manner within deadlines and budgets.
  • Enhances department and organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests and exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
  • Quantity Computation.
  • Plan Preparation.
  • Construction Inspection.

Education Requirement:

  • High School diploma.

Must-haves, what you will bring:

  • +-80% of the workload will be field-based Survey and Spatial Technology related tasks.
  • +-20% of the workload will be office-based Survey and Spatial Technology related tasks.
  • 100% availability to travel throughout the Chicago area and provide your own transportation to project sites
  • Able to regularly lift and/or move up to 35 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move 50 pounds or more (including opening manholes of various sizes and shapes).
  • Able to work in inclement weather (hot, cold and/or precipitating).
  • Able to walk and stand for an entire day.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Strong math, written, verbal, and organizational skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft software including but not limited to Excel, and Word.

Preferred Qualifications, Certifications, and Licenses:

  • Associate’s degree or training in Utility Locating School, GIS, Construction, Land Surveying, or related curriculum.
  • Utility locate experience is a plus.
  • AutoCAD Civil 3d experience is a plus.
  • Esri software experience is a plus.

Compensation: The pay range for this role is $25 - $28 per hour. Actual compensation packages are based on several factors that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, depth of experience, and certifications.
